Definitions

Who is a 'Cypriot' artist?

Our definitions concerning what a constitutes a “Cypriot” artist

  • born on the island of Cyprus
  • currently resides on the island of Cyprus
  • has ancestral heritage from the island of Cyprus

For a group, at least 51% of the members need to meet one of the criteria above

(can be different criterion for each member).

That’s it! It’s that simple.

Examples of each criterion

  • Diam’s, one of the most influential French rappers of all time. Born in Nicosia.
  • Yotan, alternative-RnB singer. Originally from Nigeria, now residing in Nicosia.
  • Antigoni, born and raised in London, with roots in Larnaca.
  • Eli Preiss, upcoming Austrian singer. Born in Nicosia.
  • ANRIE, folk-rock singer. Originally from Russia, now residing in Limassol.
  • Marina Spanou, born and raised in Athens, Greece. Has maternal roots from Limassol.
Local vs regional vs diaspora

In our articles and stats pages we often mention diaspora. But what do we mean when we say that, regional and local? To us

  • a regional artist is a Cypriot that makes music for the ‘Eastern Mediterranean’ region; Anna Vissi primarily makes music for Greece/Greek-speaking market(s) and Buray for Tûrkiye/Turkish-speaking market(s) – not for international market, like the United Kingdom or the United States. Thus they count as ‘regional’ artists.

Diaspora artists are those that make or aim to make music for an international audience, in the vein of George Michael, Doruksen, or Raphi.

  • Local artists, are just that, local!

These definitions are not to knock any artist down, but rather to put into perspective certain things – everything is relative! Even relatives 😉

There is of course OVERLAP of the definitions, but there are primarily there so artists like George Michael does not take every single spot in a “most streamed” list! 🙂
